WindGrid acquires minority stake in Tarchon interconnector project through expanded partnership with CPP Investments

On 29 July 2026, WindGrid (an Elia Group entity) and Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPP Investments) announced the acquisition of the Tarchon interconnector project, marking an important milestone in WindGrid's growth as a developer in next-generation transmission infrastructure.

This acquisition represents an important step forward in WindGrid's ambition to help build the infrastructure required for Europe's evolving electricity network. As electrification accelerates and renewable generation continues to grow, projects such as Tarchon will play a key role in enabling efficient energy flows between markets, increasing system flexibility, and supporting security of supply. The project further demonstrates WindGrid's ability to leverage Elia Group's expertise beyond its regulated transmission activities.

Tarchon is a selective, partnership-led investment that remains complementary to Elia Group’s core regulated transmission activities. The investment reflects Elia Group's disciplined approach to capital allocation and its strategy of selectively investing in critical infrastructure that delivers long-term value.

Connecting the United Kingdom and Germany

A 1.4 GW high-voltage direct current (HVDC) interconnector, Tarchon will link the electricity systems of the United Kingdom and Germany. The project will enhance cross-border electricity trading, strengthen energy security, and support the long-term decarbonisation of Europe's energy sector through the more efficient integration of renewable energy.

WindGrid remains focused on developing the critical infrastructure needed to support Europe's energy transition and build a more connected, resilient, and sustainable power system.
